The Belgian national ice hockey team is ranked 32nd in the IIHF world rankings after the 2017 World Cup and plays in Division II at the World Cup .

history

In the first four decades of the 20th century, Belgium was one of the top nations in ice hockey and could boast numerous successes. During their first four participations in the European ice hockey championship , the Belgians were able to win a medal each, three bronze medals and in 1913 even the gold medal as European champions. Only the participation in the EM 1912 was waived, which was later declared invalid by the IIHF due to the lack of association membership of Austria .

Belgium took part in the first three Olympic ice hockey tournaments, which were also considered the World Cup. Like most European participants, Belgium decided not to take part in the 1932 Winter Games in Lake Placid for reasons of cost, but entered the 1936 Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . From relegation in 1950 to the Criterium Eurepéen (the later B World Championship), Belgium could not recover in the following period and from 1961 only played in the C and D World Championship. While ice hockey was becoming increasingly professional in other European countries, it developed into a marginal sport in Belgium. Only in 2004 did Belgium play again in Division I, the second highest performance level of the World Championships, but rose straight back to Division II, in which it has played since then. In the course of the IIHF structural reform for the 2012 World Cup, Belgium was classified in the fifth class Division II, Group B. The direct promotion to the next higher division (Division II, Group A) could be realized in the same year.
