Winner: Soviet Union |
After the partial boycott of the World Cup last year because of the not granted entry permit for the GDR team was returned in the 30th Ice Hockey World Championship (at the same time 41. Hockey Championship ) adopted by 7. bis 17th March 1963 in Stockholm in Sweden took place , back to normal as the Eastern European teams competed in the world championships again.
mode
The grouping of the 21 teams (new record number of participants) was based on the 1961 World Cup , the last World Cup before the boycott. The results of this World Cup in terms of promotion and relegation were not taken into account, at least in the composition of the A group. For example, the Federal Republic of Germany was allowed to continue to play in the A group, although actually relegated in 1961, while Norway, as B world champion in 1961 and legitimate climber, had to continue to play in the B group, although the Norwegians also placed better at the World Cup last year were than the West Germans. In contrast, the promotion and relegation rules between the lower-performing groups were retained. Austria , last in group B in 1961 , had to play in group C this year, but Romania was promoted to group B as C group winner in 1961 . The Romanians were accompanied by the French , who moved up as a C-group second in 1961 for the Italians who did not play at the World Cup . Yugoslavia as third in group C was also allowed to play in group B this year so that the number of participants in group B was not smaller than that of group C.
There was no promotion and relegation regulation this year, as the Olympic Games were on the program again for the coming season and the staging of the Olympic ice hockey tournament differed from that of the pure World Cup with its grouping. Nevertheless, the performance at this World Cup was also important in the B and C groups; because the number of participants in the Olympic tournament in the coming year was limited to 16 teams, the placements in these World Cup tournaments decided on eligibility to participate.
A world championship
This year the USSR became world champion for the third time (and also European champion for the seventh time). The outcome of the tournament was close; The USSR accommodated the fact that the defending champion and host Sweden suffered an unexpected 3-2 defeat against Czechoslovakia in the very last game and in this tournament not, as was usual later, the direct comparison when there was a tie, but the goal quotient was decisive for the placement was. For the "Sbornaja" this title win was the prelude to an absolute dominance in world ice hockey, which should last for many years and should result in nine titles in a row at the coming world championships alone. All Eastern European teams benefited from the mandatory amateur status, as their players could continue to play ice hockey professionally and only practice a “normal” profession on paper (“ state amateur ”). In contrast, especially in North America, the rising professionalism of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) led to the bleeding of amateur ice hockey. In the USA , the consequences were particularly obvious, as their teams could no longer compete for medals in the years to come and mostly had to fight to stay in the A group (only seventh this year). But even for the Canadians , who are spoiled for success , it was usually enough for a bronze medal at best, at least further titles were out of the question. After 1969 , the Canadians even withdrew from the Ice Hockey World Championship for a few years in order not to have to suffer a lasting loss of prestige for all of Canadian ice hockey due to their feared poor performance in the championships. Only after the re-admission of professionals to world championships in 1977 did the "maple leaves" return to the world stage.
The upcoming German-German duel this year was not overshadowed by a scandal this time. It was won by the selection of the Federal Republic, which was able to celebrate its only victory in this tournament. In the game of the German selection against the USA, which the FRG lost 4-8, Hans-Jörg Nagel, a trained defender, was in the goal of the Germans after the two goalkeepers of the team, Michael Hobelsberger and Heinz Ohlber , had fought in the previous game who had hurt Swedes.
The A-World Championship games were attended by a total of 215,359 spectators.
