The 11th Ice Hockey World Championship and 22nd Ice Hockey European Championship took place from February 17 to 27, 1937 in London , Great Britain . The mode of competition was only slightly changed compared to the Olympic tournament of the previous year . Since only eleven teams took part in this World Cup (the USA was missing, among others ), an adjustment of the host mode was necessary. There were only three preliminary round groups, with two groups with four teams and one group with three teams. The first three of the groups of four and the first two of the group of three reached the intermediate round. The intermediate round was played again in two groups of four; the first two in each group reached the final round, the other teams played in a placement round for places 5-8. In contrast to the previous year , the direct comparisons made in the intermediate round were not included in the final round.

The Canadians achieved an impressive revenge against the British , who were unable to use their home advantage to successfully defend their title. For Canada it was the ninth world title, for Great Britain the runner-up world championship meant the third European title.
