The 8th Ice Hockey World Championship and the 19th European Ice Hockey Championship took place from February 3rd to 11th, 1934 in Milan , Italy .
Compared to last year's World Cup , no major changes were initially planned. Twelve teams took part again, with defending champions USA and record world champions Canada directly qualifying for the intermediate round. The remaining ten teams should play out the remaining six intermediate round participants in three preliminary round groups. But in the preliminary round group C there was a stalemate with three teams with equal points and goals, so the organizing committee decided to allow all three teams to move into the intermediate round. Since now nine instead of eight teams were in the intermediate round, the mode had to be changed. Instead of two groups with four teams, the game was now played in three groups with three teams each. The respective group winners went straight to the semi-finals. The fourth semi-final participant was played in an extra qualifying round for the runners-up in the group. The two eliminated teams occupied places 5 and 6 depending on the result. The three third-placed teams in the intermediate round played a placement round for places 7-12 with the teams eliminated in the preliminary round.
After the USA won the title, Canada took the championship back this year. It was the seventh world title for the Canadians. The world championship bronze medal and thus the European championship title went to Germany ; it was the second European title for the Germans.
