The 26th Ice Hockey World Championship and 37th Ice Hockey European Championship were held from March 5th to 15th, 1959 in various cities in Czechoslovakia . With 15 participants, there was a new post-war participation record at this World Cup. Therefore, a B group was set up again (called the European criterion), in which three teams and, out of competition, a B representation of the host Czechoslovakia took part. The draw for the World Cup groups took place on January 22, 1959 in Munich .

Defending champion Canada , this time represented by Belleville McFarlands , triumphed again in a direct duel against the USSR and celebrated his 18th triumph in world championships. However, the "Ahornblätter" had to rely on their better goal difference in the end, as they were defeated against hosts Czechoslovakia on the last day of the match. As in the previous year, the second-placed Soviet team had to be satisfied with their fifth European title.

For the first time there was a German-German duel at a World Cup, which the West German selection clearly won 8-0. Both teams had nothing to do with the medal award.

A world championship

The A-World Championships were held with twelve teams according to the tried and tested mode: First a preliminary round in three groups and then a final round (with the respective group winners and runners-up) and a placement round with the other teams.
