The 36th Ice Hockey World Championship and 47th Ice Hockey European Championship took place in 1969 and were marked by numerous innovations. For the first time, the A-WM on the one hand and the B and C-WM on the other hand were held in different countries and at different times. The A-group played from this year only with six teams in a double round. With this change of mode, the world ice hockey federation promised a concentration of performance and more excitement. Associated with this was a change in the mode of determining the European champion . The decisive factor was no longer the World Cup placement, but a separate European Championship table was calculated from the matches between the European teams. There was also a small change in the B and C groups of the World Cup: As of this season there were two relegated and two promoted players. A total of 20 associations registered teams for the championships.

The group A tournament is turning into a catastrophe for North American amateur ice hockey. Both the US boys and the Canadian team suffered significant defeats against the teams from the USSR , Czechoslovakia and Sweden . While the USA relegated to the second division at the end of the tournament without a single point win, the Canadians stayed away from the subsequent World Championships as a consequence of their performance in order to avoid a lasting loss of prestige for Canadian ice hockey. They only returned to the tournament in 1976 , when professional players were allowed to take part again. Due to the withdrawal of the Canadians, the second place in the B group was also considered a promotion place this year, which the team from Poland was able to secure.

The World Cup was more exciting than it has been in a long time. In the end, three teams were tied at the top. In particular, the duels between the USSR and Czechoslovakia were characterized by incredible drama. Ultimately, in this year's tournament, the USSR team won their ninth world title, which was also the seventh title in a row - a series that even the Canadians have never achieved. In addition, the USSR won its twelfth European title.
