The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1968 Winter Olympics took place from February 4th to 17th in Grenoble , France and was also the 35th ice hockey world championship and 46th ice hockey European championship . This rule applied here for the last time. In the following Olympic years, World and European Championships were held as independent tournaments. A total of 14 teams were represented in Grenoble.
Attendees
The eight teams of the A group of the Ice Hockey World Championship 1967 , the best five teams of the B group and the winner of the C group were eligible to participate . Added to this was France as host. For Poland and Italy , who did not participate, Austria moved up in B group sixth.
Tournament course
Similar to the Olympic tournament in Innsbruck, the tournament started with an elimination round. However, only the last three winners of the A World Cup last year and the three best teams in Group B took part in this round. The remaining A-group teams went straight to the final round, while the remaining B- and C-group teams went straight to the placement round. In this Olympic ice hockey tournament, the composition of the A group, reduced to six teams, was also decided in the coming season . Only the best six teams in this tournament qualified for the A-WM 1969; the seventh and eighth placed, however, had to relegate to the B group. The further composition of the B and C groups at the 1969 World Cup, on the other hand, was determined at the previous year's World Cup . The results of this tournament played no role here.
The highlight of the ice hockey tournament was the game between the USSR and Czechoslovakia , in which the Soviet series winner was beaten by another team for the first time in years with 4: 5. Before that, the USSR had remained undefeated in 38 World Cup and Olympic encounters between 1963 and 1968. Despite this defeat, the Sbornaja achieved the third Olympic victory as well as the eighth world or eleventh European championship title, as the ČSSR had lost the game against Canada in the course of the tournament and played a draw against Sweden.
Since the two German states were allowed to compete with their own team at the Olympic Games for the first time, there was no qualification within Germany before this ice hockey tournament.

Final placement of the EM
Ice hockey European champion 1968 USSR
In contrast to the official version, Czechoslovakia is listed as the European champion in some recent statistics . This information is based on the regulations, which were originally only introduced in 1969, according to which a separate European Championship table was created on the basis of comparisons between the European teams. Since 1999, these criteria have also been used retrospectively for the "pure" world championships that have been held since 1961. Subsequent application to the Olympic ice hockey tournaments is only possible to a limited extent, however, which is due to the special mode of the event - by not taking part in the final round, the teams playing in the placement round cannot be included. In most of the recognized statistics, in which the placement at the Olympic tournament is decisive for the EM placement according to the conventional method, the USSR is therefore considered to be the European champion. For the sake of completeness, however, an EM points table is also listed here.
|
|
With the establishment of a championship and a relegation round, a return to the "placement evaluation" for determining the European champion was also made at the world championships in 1976 .
