The European ice hockey championship in 1921 was the first staging of this competition after the First World War and the sixth staging overall. The only two participants met in February 1921 in the Swedish Stockholm each other. Host Sweden won 7: 4 against Czechoslovakia and became European champions at their first European Championship participation. The team of Czechoslovakia, which was newly founded after the First World War, followed the tradition of the Bohemian national team , which had become European champions twice before the war.

Originally, the tournament was to be held as the first world championship. In the previous year the North American associations of Canada and the USA had joined the International Ice Hockey Federation LIHG and the first Olympic ice hockey tournament was held in Antwerp (which was later declared the first world championship). During the Olympic tournament, the Czechoslovak Association was asked to host the 1921 World Cup. This refused for fear of bad weather, so the tournament was awarded to Sweden. However, of the seven LIHG members, only Czechoslovakia made the trip to Sweden so that the tournament was played as a European championship in just one game. According to the results of the Olympic tournament in 1920, however, these were also the two best European countries. However, due to the mild winter, the Czechoslovaks had only been able to train in Prague for four days. The European championship inspired Sweden to host the first Swedish ice hockey championship in 1922 .

The game took place on a natural ice rink in Stockholm that was electrically lit. 6,000 spectators attended the game. The exact date of the game is unclear, various sources cite February 18th, 21st or 23rd.
