The 39th ice hockey world championship (also the 50th European ice hockey championship ) in 1972 was the first pure world championship in an Olympic year . Since this season there have been two season highlights in the Olympic years with the Olympic tournament and the World Championship, with the exception of 1980 , 1984 and 1988 , in which no World Championship was held.
The group A tournament was held in Prague . The Czechoslovak team used their home advantage and became world champions for the third time (and European champions for the twelfth time). This ended a series of nine successive world titles of the Soviet Union .
20 teams took part in the three tournaments of the World Cup this year, including China for the first time . The French team did not compete in Group B to protest that the French association had not financed the trip to the Olympic tournament in Sapporo, Japan .

A world championship
This year's title fights were held in Prague and brought an interruption to Soviet dominance. After nine titles in a row, the USSR had to be content with second place in this event. The new title holder was Czechoslovakia , which won its third world championship and also its twelfth European title. In addition to the home advantage, they may have benefited from the fact that the World Championships took place around two months after the Winter Olympics . If the Soviet team was still able to triumph over there, it did not succeed in maintaining this high level until the World Cup tournament. In fact, it wasn't until 2006 that the Swedish team became the first team ever to win both tournaments in one year.
The venue for the tournament was the Sportovní hala ČSTV , which at that time had a capacity of 14,389 spectators.

B world championship
At the B-World Cup in Bucharest , the USA did not manage to get promoted again immediately. She also suffered from the two highlights of the season, after winning the silver medal at the Olympic tournament after a strong performance, but could not call up the best performance again at the B tournament. France , which was promoted to the B group last year , decided not to participate and was relegated straight away.
