The 73rd Men's A Ice Hockey World Championship in 2009 was awarded by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF to the founding member Switzerland and was held from April 24 to May 10, 2009 in Bern and Kloten .

The 2009 IIHF World Championship was the largest sporting event taking place in Switzerland. The organizing committee expected more than 300,000 visitors. Around 800 million viewers were able to watch more than 3,400 hours of World Cup ice hockey via 163 TV stations.

This is the tenth time that Switzerland has been awarded the contract to host an ice hockey world championship after 1928 , 1935 , 1939 , 1948 , 1953 , 1961 , 1971 , 1990 and 1998 . This gave the Swiss ice hockey association SEHV the opportunity to celebrate the association's 100th anniversary with a one-year delay. The host of the European Football Championship 2008 together with Austria and the 100th birthday of the Canadian ice hockey association, Hockey Canada , spoke against the event in the actual anniversary year of 2008 .

After beating Canada in the final , defending champions Russia became world champions again.

The top division world championship was held from April 24th to May 10th, 2009 in the Swiss cities of Bern and Kloten . The game was played in the PostFinance Arena (11,421 places) in Bern and the Kolping Arena in Kloten with 6,851 places.

Venues

The PostFinance Arena in Bern was renovated from August 2007 until the start of the tournament in 2009 and actually offered 17,131 spectators instead of 16,789. Due to the installation of seats in the entire arena, only 11,421 seats were available. The Kolping Arena in Kloten - as part of the World Championships Arena Zurich-Kloten - was expanded to a higher audience capacity of 7,624 seats for the 2008/09 season. As part of the tournament, it offered space for a maximum of 6,851 spectators.

Mode changes

Compared to the previous World Cup in Canada , there were two changes to the mode of the event:

  • the quarter-finals were played again between the two intermediate round groups due to the shorter distances between the venues, that is, the first of one group met fourth of the other group and the second of one group against the third of the other group;
  • the relegation round of the fourth placed from the preliminary round was played again in the group system.

Attendees

The 14 best teams from last year's World Cup as well as the winners of the two tournaments in Division I last year took part in the tournament:
