Christopher "Chris" Phillips (born March 8, 1978 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender spent his entire career with the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League and holds the franchise record for the most played games with 1,179 appearances . In addition, his jersey number 4 has not been awarded in Ottawa since February 2020 . With the Canadian national team , the first overall in the NHL Entry Draft in 1996 won a silver medal at the 2005 and 2009 World Championships .
Career
Phillips began his career in Fort McMurray and moved as a junior to the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Prince Albert Raiders . After a successful season, which was upgraded to gold at the Junior World Championship, the Ottawa Senators used their entire first draft right in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft to sign Phillips. He stayed for another year in the WHL and moved to the Lethbridge Hurricanes during the season with whom he reached the finals of the Memorial Cup . There, however, the Hurricanes were subject to the Hull Olympiques . He was more successful with the Canadian junior national team, with which he was able to defend the world title.
The Senators brought Phillips to the NHL for the 1997/98 season . Here he initially had difficulties adapting his game to the new level. Nevertheless, Phillips secured a regular place in the NHL, but did not make it to the star player. He spent the 2004/05 strike season in Sweden at Brynäs IF and then returned to Ottawa.
During the 2014/15 season, Phillips increased his total number of NHL appearances to 1,179, overtaking Daniel Alfredsson by one game and is thus the Senators' new record player. After he was out of the season 2015/16 due to a back injury, he announced the end of his playing career in May 2016. However, Phillips stayed with the Senators and took on a management position.
In February 2020 , the Ottawa Senators locked his jersey number 4.
