Gregory James Joly (born May 30, 1954 in Rocky Mountain House , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played for the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League from 1974 to 1983 .

Career

As a junior he played for the Regina Pats in the WCJHL with players like Clark Gillies . In 1974 he won the Memorial Cup with the Pats and played outstandingly so that he was voted the most valuable player of the final tournament. Impressed by this, the Washington Capitals selected him in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft with the first draft vote.

Immediately for the 1974/75 season they brought him into the NHL and hoped to have brought him the next star of their defense. An injury in the pre-season set him back and when he got in shape towards the end of the year he was injured again. The high expectations weighed on his shoulders and he didn't seem up to the pressure. After two seasons, the Capitals separated from him and sent him to the Detroit Red Wings .

The 1976/77 season he spent part of the AHL farm team with the Springfield Indians . He played a solid role with the Red Wings until 1983, but was also repeatedly used with the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL. He stayed at Adirondack for another three years as one of the best defenders in the league until he retired in 1986.
