Junior area (2004-2009)

Tavares is the youngest player ever to be elected in the OHL draft . In the OHL Priority Selection 2005 he was selected in the first position by the Oshawa Generals and, due to an exception, he was the first 15-year-old to be used in the OHL. Tavares is considered particularly talented, which he proved through his performances in the OHL. In his sophomore year in Oshawa, the then 16-year-old even broke some of the Canadian junior records held by Wayne Gretzky . At the end of the season he was voted the best player in the OHL and CHL .

New York Islanders (2009-2018)

In the fall of 2007, his agent tried to convince the National Hockey League and the players' union to allow him for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft with a special permit. All available players for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft must have been born before September 15, 1990, but Tavare's birthday is five days later on September 20. After the request had been rejected, the Toronto Maple Leafs tried to oblige the Canadian for their American Hockey League - farm team Toronto Marlies , but this also failed due to a league veto and Tavares thus returned to the OHL. At the NHL Entry Draft 2009 he was finally selected as the first overall by the New York Islanders and signed a three-year entry contract there. With the Islanders he was able to establish himself directly in the NHL squad and scored his first goal on his debut in the top division of North America. Tavares finished the 2009/10 season with a total of 54 points scorer as the player with the highest points in his team and was still the second best rookie in the NHL behind Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche . In October 2010, the left-handed shooter scored the first hat trick of his NHL career in the game against the Florida Panthers , before scoring three goals in a third for the first time in January 2011 against the Buffalo Sabers .

In the run-up to the 2011/12 season, Tavares extended his contract with the Islanders by six years for a total reported salary of 33 million US dollars. Right at the start, in October 2011, he marked four scorer points in two consecutive games and was appointed assistant captain of the team later in the season . In January 2012, the Canadian ran for the first time in the league's all-star game and scored one goal and one assist each.

Due to the lockout at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , he played for SC Bern in the Swiss National League A from September 2012 . This engagement was initially limited to two months or until the restart of the NHL season. After the game was resumed in the NHL, Tavares returned to the Islanders and ended the shortened season with 47 scorer points from 48 games. In September 2013, the Canadian was appointed as the new team captain as the successor to the emigrated Mark Streit . After tearing an internal ligament and meniscus tear while participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics , he was out for the remainder of the remainder of the NHL season. The following year , Tavares played with 86 scorer points, the highest point season of his previous NHL career, but Jamie Benn had to admit defeat to win the Art Ross Trophy as the most attacking player in the league.

Toronto Maple Leafs (since 2018)

At the end of the 2017/18 season, the Canad’s contract with the Islanders expired after a previous agreement on an early extension was not reached. Subsequently, Tavares became one of the most sought-after free agents in NHL history, with a number of teams campaigning for the attacker's services, including the San Jose Sharks , Toronto Maple Leafs , Tampa Bay Lightning , Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins . In addition, the Islanders continued to negotiate with him to convince him to stay in New York. Finally, on July 1, 2018, the first day of the free-agent period, Tavares signed a seven-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 11 million. He became one of the highest-paid players in the NHL, as well as the highest-paid player in the Maple Leafs. In this regard, he is said to have rejected even higher-endowed contracts, for example from the San Jose Sharks, in order to be able to play for the team of his childhood.

In his first season in the Maple Leafs jersey, Tavares achieved career highs in goals (47) and scorer points (88) before being named the 25th team captain in franchise history at the beginning of the 2019/20 season .

International

Tavares represented his home country for the first time at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2006 . During his junior years he also took part in the 2007 Super Series . The attacker also represented the Canadian selection at the 2008 and 2009 Junior World Championships . Tavares won gold medals twice in a row and was honored with several individual awards in 2009. In addition to being named the most valuable player in the tournament, he was also voted best striker and into the all-star team of the World Cup.

Tavares was named to the Canadian squad for the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship . During the tournament he scored seven goals and was the top scorer in the World Cup, but the Canadian selection missed a medal rank and failed in the quarterfinals to Russia . In 2014 he became Olympic champion with the Canadian national team . He also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and won the gold medal there with the team.
