Career
Beginnings in the youth sector (2001-2004)
Mark Giordano first played from 2001 to 2002 with the Brampton Capitals in the lower class Canadian junior league Ontario Junior Hockey League . In his only season with the team, the defender won the Buckland Cup with the Capitals when they defeated the Wellington Dukes in six encounters in the final series and won the provincial championship of the second-highest junior level in Ontario. The left shooter spent the following two seasons with the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League . There Giordano convinced in his preferred role as an offensive defender and was by far the best defender in the Owen Sound Attack jersey in the two OHL seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04 , with the Canadian among the ten most successful scorers among the defenders in the league. After completing his rookie season , Giordano was appointed to the selection team of the best newcomers of the Ontario Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey League . In contrast, the team successes remained rather modest, which was also reflected in Giordano's relatively even plus / minus balance. Although they made it into the OHL finals, the Owen Sound Attack failed in the first round.
First engagement with the Calgary Flames and move to Dynamo Moscow (2004–2008)
Subsequently, Giordano, who was never drafted , was signed by the Calgary Flames as a free agent in July 2004 . Initially, the defender played for the two then farm teams of the Flames, the Lowell Lock Monsters and the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights from the American Hockey League . During the 2005/06 season , on January 30, 2006 in the game against the St. Louis Blues , the Canadian made his debut in the National Hockey League for Calgary. In total, he came to seven missions in his first NHL season. The Canadian finished the 2005/06 AHL season with 16 hits and 42 assists as the best scorer of the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. Throughout the league, the left-handed shooter took fourth place among defenders.
On October 14, 2006, he scored his first two NHL goals in an away game with the Toronto Maple Leafs , in his hometown of all places. On August 28, 2007, Giordano rejected a two-way contract for the Flames and their farm team. He then signed a contract with HK Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League , for which a total of 50 games played in the 2007/08 season and marked 12 points scorer.
Return to the Calgary Flames (since 2008)
In the summer of 2008 Giordano returned to the Flames after accepting a three-year contract exclusively for the NHL team. In the following season , the Canadian completed a total of 58 games for the Flames, before a shoulder injury sustained in the game against the Minnesota Wild put him out of action for the rest of the season in February 2008 . The 2009/10 season he finished with 41 scorer points and a plus / minus member and not of +17 for the Flames and was then in January 2010 by the prestigious North American Hockey - trade magazine The Hockey News as one of the most underrated players in the National Hockey League elected.
In October 2010, the Canadians extended his contract with the Flames for five years and it gets an annual salary of 4.02 million US dollars . The following season was to be one of the most successful in Giordano's career, with 43 points scorer in 82 games, his season with the highest points in the NHL to date. For the 2011/12 season , the left shooter was appointed one of the Flames' assistant captains, but was only able to play 61 season games due to a hamstring tear . In the summer of 2013, Giordano was named the 19th team captain in the history of the Flames as the successor to Jarome Iginla . Right at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , the defensive player suffered a broken ankle when blocking an opponent's end and had to pause for 18 games as a result.
In the following year Giordano had a significant share in the interim sporting success of the Flames with strong offensive performances. In November 2014 he was named Player of the Month in the NHL and took part in the All-Star Game in January 2015 . A month later, the defender completed his 500th game in the NHL in beating the Winnipeg Jets . Overall, Giordano achieved a new personal best with 48 points scorer before he suffered a ruptured biceps tendon in the game against the New Jersey Devils at the end of February and was out for the rest of the season. The Canadian increased this record to 56 points the following year before reaching the playoffs for the first time in ten years with the Flames in the 2016/17 season.
In the 2018/19 season, Giordano recorded his previous career record with 74 scorer points and also led the entire league in the plus / minus statistics (+39). The NHL Plus / Minus Award is no longer officially awarded. In addition, he was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defender and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team .
International
Giordano played for Team Canada during the Spengler Cup in 2007 and contributed to the Canadian team's tournament win with two assists. Giordano was also part of the national team at the 2008 World Cup . However, it was not used there. For the 2010 World Cup , the defender was called up again in the squad and was on the ice in all seven games of the Canadians, with Giordano contributing three goals and one assist to the quarter-finals.
Style of play
Giordano is considered an excellent skater , with his offensive skills being particularly valuable. It is also used in numerous outnumbered situations, while it shows weaknesses in all-round situations. He often lacks the ability to assert himself against physically strong players, although Giordano, as a strongly built defender, is one of the leading players in Calgary. In particular, his commitment and work ethic are praised by teammates and coaches in Calgary, Giordano is still considered one of the elementary components of the team and consequently acts as the captain of the Flames.
