David Rittich (born August 19, 1992 in Jihlava ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since June 2016 .

Career

In his youth David Rittich went through the junior departments of HC Dukla Jihlava from his hometown. He spent the 2008/09 season partly on loan in the U18 of HC Havířov , but subsequently returned to Jihlava and guarded the goal for its U20 until 2012 in the highest junior league in the Czech Republic. In addition, he made his debut in the course of the 2011/12 season for the men's team of HC Dukla Jihlava in the first division of the Czech Republic , the country's second-highest division. Then Rittich was regularly used in the first division, where he alternated regularly with Filip Novotný in the 2012/13 season before he rose to Jihlava's first goalkeeper in 2013/14.

In June 2014 the Czech was signed by BK Mladá Boleslav from the Extraliga . In the country's top league, the goalkeeper played 23 games in his debut season with an average of 3.15 conceded goals and a catch rate of 89.2. At the same time, he continued to work on loan for his home club, for which he was subsequently also in goal in the playoffs. With the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Rittich established himself in the goal of BK Mladá Boleslav and played 48 of 52 games in the regular season.

In June 2016, the goalkeeper was awarded a one-year contract by the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL), without having previously been considered in an NHL Entry Draft . As expected, the Flames used him for the time being on their farm team , the Stockton Heat , in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he shared the playing time with Jon Gillies . He finally made his NHL debut for Calgary in April 2017, replacing Brian Elliott for the final 20 minutes of the game against the San Jose Sharks . In the course of the following season 2017/18, Rittich earned the position of backup behind Mike Smith in the Flames' NHL squad, previously held by Eddie Läck . In the following year, both goalkeepers played roughly the same number of games, so the Czech signed a new two-year contract in Calgary in July 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of US $ 2.75 million. In the following season 2019/20 Rittich became the goalkeeper of the Flames against the newly signed Cam Talbot .

International

Rittich made his debut for the Czech national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2017/18, before a little later he was also in the squad at the 2018 World Cup and finished seventh with the team.
