Matthew Tkachuk (born December 11, 1997 in Scottsdale , Arizona ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since July 2016 . The left winger was selected in sixth position by the Flames in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft .
Career
Matthew Tkachuk was born in Scottsdale when his father Keith Tkachuk was under contract with the Phoenix Coyotes , and grew up in St. Louis when Keith Tkachuk switched to the blues there during the 2000/01 season. There, Matthew Tkachuk played in the youth teams of the St. Louis Blues before he switched to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USA Hockey NTDP), the central talent factory of the US ice hockey association, at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . With the NTDP, the winger took part in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the USA, and in parallel played many games outside of the game operations of a league against junior and college teams in the country. In addition, the U17 and U18 teams of the NTDP each act as junior national teams, so that he took part in the World U17 Hockey Challenge 2014 with the U17 and won the gold medal there. Tkachuk also won the gold medal the following year at the U18 World Cup in 2015 , where he also led all players in templates (10).
After the 2015/16 season, he left the NTDP for reasons of age and did not, as previously announced in January 2013, switch to the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame and thus to the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), but decided to a move to the Canadian Ontario Hockey League (OHL), one of the three major Canadian junior leagues . His OHL rights have held the London Knights (selected in 64th place) since the Priority Selection of 2013 , so that he ran up for the team at the beginning of the 2015/16 season. At the Knights, Tkachuk, together with Mitchell Marner and Christian Dvorak, formed by far the best offensive series in the league and scored 107 points in 57 games , the fifth best value of the season, so that he was elected to the OHL's First All-Star Team . He then won the OHL playoffs with the team and thus the J. Ross Robertson Cup , where he led the league with 20 goals, and then the Memorial Cup . Over the turn of the year he was also part of Team USA at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , where he won the bronze medal with the team.
Tkachuk was available for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and was considered a likely top 5 pick, as the International Scouting Service placed him in fourth overall position and the Central Scouting Service in second overall position for North American outfield players. In the actual draft, the Calgary Flames then elected him in sixth position and a little later equipped him with a three-year entry-level contract .
In his first NHL season, Tkachuk came in 76 games to 48 scorer points and led the Flames in penalty minutes (105). At the same time, however, he regularly succeeds in convincing opponents to punish them, leading the league in the 2017/18 season in penalty minutes incurred by the opponent per game. In sum, his style of play is mainly described with the term plague .
In the 2018/19 season, the attacker significantly increased his personal stats to 77 points from 80 games and then signed a new three-year contract in Calgary in September 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of seven million US dollars. With his 61 points in the following season, the American became his team's top scorer for the first time.
