Noah Hanifin (born January 25, 1997 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames since June 2018 . Previously, he spent three years with the Carolina Hurricanes , which selected him as fifth in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

Noah Hanifin was born in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Norwood with two younger siblings. In his youth he played for the South Shore Kings at Foxborough , where he was used at the beginning of his ice hockey career as an attacker before moving to defense. He later attended St. Sebastian's School in Needham , where he had already established himself as a 13-year-old eighth grader in the school's team and thus ran up against opponents who were up to five years older. After three years in the high school league, in which Hanifin scored 74 points in 83 games, the defender moved to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the United States' ice hockey federation.

As part of the NTDP, Hanifin completed 31 games in the United States Hockey League , the highest junior league in the United States, during the 2013/14 season . Since the team also acts as the youth national team, the defender took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 and the U18 World Championship 2014 and won the gold medal in both tournaments. In the fall of 2014 he left the NTDP to begin studying at Boston College , where he also played for the Eagles in Hockey East in the NCAA network . As a freshman , the American scored 23 points in 37 games and was appointed to the All-Rookie Team and the Second All-Star Team at Hockey East after the season .

With his achievements, he was considered one of the most promising talents for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and was the most highly rated defensive player of all scouting services, with Central Scouting Services placing him third among North American outfield players and International Scouting Services fourth overall . In the actual draft, the Carolina Hurricanes selected him from 5th position and a little later gave him a three-year entry contract .

During the following pre-season preparation, Hanifin won a regular place in the team and has been part of the Hurricanes' NHL squad since the beginning of the 2015/16 season. After his first NHL season, he also took part with the US national team in the 2016 World Cup, where he finished fourth with the team. During the 2017/18 season he represented the Hurricanes for the first time in the NHL All-Star Game . In June 2018, however, Hanifin and Elias Lindholm were given to the Calgary Flames , who sent Dougie Hamilton , Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox to Carolina for this. In late August 2018, he signed a new six-year contract in Calgary that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.95 million.
