In the run-up to the NHL All-Star Games, four teams were formed, each consisting of players from one division. One player from each division was selected by means of a fan vote, who also acts as team captain. In this vote, Steven Stamkos , Alexander Ovetschkin , PK Subban and Connor McDavid prevailed. The other ten players in the eleven-man squad (six forwards, three defenders, two goalkeepers) were determined directly by the NHL, with each of the 31 franchises represented by at least one actor. The coaches who and their teams have the best points average in the respective division (cut-off date January 6, 2018) were automatically nominated as team bosses.
As in the previous year, the respective divisions of a conference competed against each other in the two semifinals and thus determined the two finalists. Each of the three games was played in 3-on-3 mode over 20 minutes each. If it had been a draw after regular playing time, a shootout would have followed immediately .
As in previous events, the NHL All-Star Skills Competition was held this year on the day before the actual All-Star Game , in which the players competed against each other in individual competitions.
