Michael David "Mike" Green (born October 12, 1985 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 956 games for the Washington Capitals , Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers in the National between 2001 and 2020 Hockey League (NHL). The defender spent most of his career between 2005 and 2015 in the organization of the Washington Capitals, in whose service he was twice appointed to the NHL First All-Star Team and with the farm team Hershey Bears in 2006 the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League ( AHL). In addition, Green won the silver medal with the Canadian national team at the 2008 World Cup .
Career
The 188 cm tall defender began his career in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades before being selected 29th in the first round by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft .
Initially employed by the Hershey Bears , a farm team of the Capitals in the American Hockey League , the right-handed shooter completed his first NHL games for Washington in the 2005/06 season , and from the 2006/07 season he was part of the main squad of the Capitals. In 2007 Green was nominated for the “Young Stars Game” taking place in the framework of the NHL All-Star Game , and he scored three assists for the Eastern Conference team .
From the 2007/08 season Green was a permanent member of the Capitals in the NHL. At the beginning of July 2008, he extended his contract with the Caps by four years, which guaranteed him a total salary of 21 million US dollars. On February 14, 2009, Green scored at least one goal in the eighth game in a row, setting a new NHL record for defenders. The previous record was held by Mike O'Connell , who scored seven times in a row in the 1983/84 season . After completing the 2008/09 regular season , which the Canadian had finished with 31 goals and 42 assists as the best-in-point defender in the NHL, Green was nominated for the first time in his career for the James Norris Memorial Trophy as best defender.
After more than nine seasons in Washington, his contract was not extended after the 2014/15 season, so he joined the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent . He spent almost five years there before being handed over to the Edmonton Oilers for the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, the Red Wings received a conditional four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft , one of which is to become one for the third round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft , provided the Oilers reach the conference final in the following playoffs and Green reaches at least half of it of games. In addition, the Red Wings took over Kyle Brodziak's contract and half of Green's salary. At the end of the season, the 34-year-old ended his active career.
International
For Canada , Green took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2003 , where he became world champion with his team. At the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2008 he was in the senior team of Team Canada for the first time and won the silver medal. In addition, Green was elected to the All-Star Team of the World Championship.
