The 2001/02 WHL season was the 36th season of the Western Hockey League . The regular season began on September 21, 2001 and ended on March 19, 2002. The Red Deer Rebels won the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the team with the highest points in the preliminary round , but were subject to the Kootenay Ice in the final of the playoffs, making it their second President's Cup secured.

Changes

The Vancouver Giants were founded and increased the number of participating teams to 19. In the same breath, the WHL completely changed the league system, so the previous three divisions (East, Central, West) were dissolved and four new divisions were founded in two conferences . In the east there was henceforth the East and Central Division with five teams each, while in the west the British Columbia (BC) Division consisted of five and the US Division of four teams. For the playoffs, the four best teams in each division were now qualified, but the fifth of the British Columbia Division could qualify instead of the fourth of the US Division if he had collected more points.
