Kurt Sauer (born January 16, 1981 in St. Cloud , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who has played for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , Colorado Avalanche and Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League during his active career . His brothers Kent Sauer and Michael Sauer were also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Kurt Sauer began his career as a hockey player with the North Iowa Huskies , for which he was active in the United States Hockey League in the 1998/99 season . The defender then played for the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League for three years . During this time, the American was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the third round as a total of 88th player by the Colorado Avalanche , which did not sign him in the following two years, so that Sauer signed a contract as a Free agent with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim .

With the Mighty Ducks, Sauer reached the Stanley Cup playoffs in his rookie season in the National Hockey League , in which he and his team were defeated by the New Jersey Devils in the best-of-seven series with 3: 4 wins. Although Sauer was always a regular in the one and a half years in Anaheim, the Californians gave him in February 2004 together with a draft pick to the Colorado Avalanche, for which he played the following four years. In return, Colorado had given up Martin Škoula to Anaheim.

From summer 2008 Sauer was under contract with the Phoenix Coyotes . After being used regularly in his first season, the American only played one NHL game in the 2009/10 season due to injury. The defender then suspended the game for the following two seasons.
