The 2009/10 season of the National Hockey League was the 92nd season played in the North American professional ice hockey league . The regular season began on October 1, 2009 with two opening games between the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues in Stockholm and the Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers in Helsinki . After the end of the regular season, which was played until April 12, 2010, the playoffs began for the prestigious Stanley Cup .

In addition to the renewed season opener in Europe, the fourth outdoor game in the history of the league was played on January 1, 2010, when the Boston Bruins met the Philadelphia Flyers in Fenway Park . The traditional NHL All-Star Game was canceled due to the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada .

Increase in the salary cap

On June 26, 2009, the National Hockey League announced that the salary cap , the salary cap set by the league for players, had been increased for the fifth time in a row. The maximum wage was increased to $ 56,800,000 per team for the 2009/10 season based on the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement . This is a slight increase of $ 100,000 over the previous year. The minimum wage per team is $ 40.8 million.

Entry Draft

The 47th NHL Entry Draft took place on June 26 and 27, 2009 at the Bell Center in Montréal , Québec , Canada . The election of the first round of the Entry Draft was carried out on the first day, the remaining rounds were chosen on the second day. The selection order of the 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs in the preseason was determined in a lottery on April 14, 2008, which the New York Islanders won and kept their first place as the worst team of the previous season.

In first position , the New York Islanders selected the Canadian striker John Tavares . In places two to five followed three strikers and a defender, including the Swede Victor Hedman , who was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning , in second place . The top ten players drafted included seven Canadians and three Swedes. The best American was Nick Leddy , who was selected by the Minnesota Wild in 16th place .

In total, the 30 franchises secured the rights to 211 players. As the only German Dominik Bielke of the Eisbären Berlin was drafted in the seventh round in 207th place by the San Jose Sharks .

Regular season

Opening in Europe

The regular season opened on October 2 and 3, 2009 with two opening games between the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues in the Globe Arena in Stockholm , and the Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers in the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki . Originally even six teams were supposed to start the season in Europe, but due to disagreements with the players' union, the two games planned in Prague had to be canceled.

NHL Winter Classic 2010

After the success of the last two Winter Classics, the leaders of the league announced that they would like to organize an open-air Winter Classic this season as well. The game between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers was played on January 1, 2010 in the legendary Fenway Park in Boston , which is otherwise the home of the Boston Red Sox baseball club .

38,112 spectators watched the game, in which the local Bruins defeated the Flyers 2-1 in overtime. Danny Syvret had put the Flyers in the lead in the second period. Mark Recchi equalized with the Bruins two minutes before the end of the game, while Germany's Marco Sturm scored the winner for the Boston Bruins in the second minute of overtime.

NHL All-Star Game

The next all-star game will not be played until 2011 due to changes in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the scheduling of the 2010 Olympic ice hockey tournament.

With 83 assists and 112 points, Henrik Sedin led the scorer lists of the NHL. The top scorers were Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos with 51 goals each. In the plus / minus rating, Jeff Schultz led with a score of +50 . The most power play goals were scored by Steven Stamkos, who scored 24 times in the majority. Alexander Ovetschkin was the player who shot on goal the most frequently with 368 shots. As in the previous year, the Chicago Blackhawks had the best average attendance with 21,356 visitors, while the Phoenix Coyotes came in last with 11,989 visitors per home game. The total number of viewers for the more than 1,200 regular season games was just under 21 million.
