James "Jamie" Benn (born July 18, 1989 in Victoria , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger has been under contract with the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League since 2009 and has also been their team captain since the 2013/14 season. With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics . His brother Jordie is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Jamie Benn began his career as a hockey player with the Peninsula Panthers, for whom he was on the ice until 2006. Then the Canadian was active in the 2006/07 season for the Victoria Grizzlies in the British Columbia Hockey League . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the fifth round as a total of 129th player by the Dallas Stars . First, however, the attacker ran for two years in the Western Hockey League for the Kelowna Rockets , with whom he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2009 as WHL champions. With 33 points in 19 playoff games, he played a major role in this success and was therefore the top scorer in the WHL playoffs.
He then received a contract with the Dallas Stars before the 2009/10 season , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 3, 2009 in the home game against the Nashville Predators .
For the duration of the NHL lockout in the 2012/13 season he played with the Hamburg Freezers in the German Ice Hockey League . In January 2013, he agreed with the stars on a five-year contract extension for a total reported salary of $ 26.25 million.
In the run-up to the 2013-14 season , Benn was named the sixth team captain in the history of the franchise . In the 2014/15 season he scored a hat trick in the last game of the season against the Nashville Predators and also contributed a goal assist to his team's 4-1 victory eight seconds before the end, so that he had 87 points and one point ahead of John Tavares prevailed by the New York Islanders and won the Art Ross Trophy as the best points player of the regular season. Despite this success, Benn could not help his team into the play-offs and retired with the stars after the main round. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the Canadian built on his achievements from the previous year and scored 17 points in the first eleven games, making him NHL Player of the Month for October. In July 2016, the Stars renewed his contract, with the attacker earning an average annual salary of $ 9.5 million over the next eight seasons. This makes him one of the highest paid players in the NHL.
International
Jamie Benn was called up during his second season in the WHL together with his teammate Tyler Myers in the Canadian U20 national team and took part with this in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 . Benn scored four goals and two assists in six games in the world championships and contributed to the U20 selection becoming junior world champions again. He was on the ice for the Canadian men's team at the 2012 World Cup . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Benn won the gold medal with the Canadian national team.
In September 2016, Benn was supposed to take part in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled due to an injury.
