Mattias Janmark-Nylén (born December 8, 1992 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League since April 2015 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup .
Career
Beginnings in Sweden
Mattias Janmark was born in Stockholm and, like his four years older brother Jonatan , played in his youth for the SDE HF , a youth team from Stocksund , a suburb of the Swedish capital. During the 2008/09 season, the center moved to the U18 junior team of the then second division AIK Ishockey from Solna . The following year he completed his first appearances in the J20 SuperElit , the highest junior league in Sweden. In his first full season in the SuperElit Janmark came to 28 scorer points in 40 games and was named team captain at the beginning of the following season . In this he increased his personal statistics significantly to 61 points in 40 games, so that he was appointed to the AIK A-squad after the end of the junior season and subsequently his first 18 professional appearances in the Elitserien , the highest Swedish league , completed.
In the 2012/13 season, which he spent entirely in the AIK's senior squad, Janmark scored 14 goals and 17 assists in 55 games, earning him one of four nominations for rookie of the year (however, the later winner was William Karlsson ). At the same time, the attacker attracted enough attention to be selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 79th position by the Detroit Red Wings . For the time being, however, Janmark stayed in his home country with AIK, with whom he was relegated to HockeyAllsvenskan in the 2013/14 season. Shortly thereafter, the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Red Wings from the American Hockey League (AHL), took him under contract on a trial basis until the end of the season, so that he came to his first eight appearances in North America. The center did not leave a lasting impression, however, so that it returned to Sweden a little later, where the AIK handed it over to Frölunda HC in June 2014 , so that Janmark continued to play first-class.
During the 2014/15 season, in which he produced 36 points for Frölunda HC, the Red Wings gave his NHL rights including Mattias Bäckman to the Dallas Stars and received Erik Cole in return . The "mastermind" of the transfer was Jim Nill , General Manager of the Dallas Stars, who was still working as a scout for Detroit in 2013 and was instrumental in the Red Wings' selection of the Swede in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. As in the previous year, Janmark traveled to the United States after the season ended in 2015 to play for the Texas Stars , the Dallas Stars' farm team, although he only made a single appearance in the Calder Cup playoffs.
NHL
So it was actually clear that Janmark should spend at least another year in Sweden, so that he started the 2015/16 season in late summer at Frölunda HC in the Champions Hockey League . In September he traveled to North America again for a junior tournament and the stars' training camp, but with little chance of success. However, Janmark was so convincing in preparation that he not only completed all the preparatory games, but actually made the jump into the final NHL roster of stars. This was followed by an impressive start to his rookie season, in which he scored his first and second NHL goal with the first shot after a few seconds in his first two competitive games. With two assists in the two following games, he became the first player in franchise history to score a scorer point in each of his first four NHL games.
At the end of September 2016 it became known that Janmark had been diagnosed with osteochondrosis dissecans in the knee, a disease of the cartilage and bones in the joint . The treatment made an operation necessary, so that the Swede was out for the entire 2016/17 season.
International
On an international level, Janmark represented his home country in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons at the Euro Hockey Tour , with the team winning the gold medal in 2015. He then took part in the 2018 World Cup with the Tre Kronor , where he also won the gold medal with the team.
