William "Bill" Karlsson (born January 8, 1993 in Märsta ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League since June 2017 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
Career
William Karlsson began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of Arlanda Wings HC. From there he moved to VIK Västerås HK in 2009 , for whose professional team he made his debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division, in the 2010/11 season . In his rookie year , he scored one goal in 14 games and gave three assists. He was then selected in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 53 players by the Anaheim Ducks . For the 2012/13 season he was signed by the Swedish first division club HV71 . In his rookie season he was used in 50 preliminary round games of the Elitserien, with the left shooter booked four goals and 24 assists ; it also had a value of +17 in the plus / minus balance. In May 2013, Karlsson was given a three-year entry contract by the Anaheim Ducks .
After spending the 2013/14 season on loan at HV71, where he was an assistant captain, Karlsson made his debut for the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League . In the 2014/15 season he also came to his first missions for the Anaheim Ducks, which, however, handed him over to the Columbus Blue Jackets in March 2015 together with René Bourque and a second-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Ducks received James Wisniewski and a third-round vote in the same draft.
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the Swede established himself in the NHL Blue Jackets line-up. However, in June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . In addition, Vegas received a first-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft from the Jackets and in return took over the contract from David Clarkson .
At the Golden Knights, the Swede increased his performance significantly, scoring 43 goals and 78 scorer points, leading his team in both statistics in their first NHL season. In addition, it achieved the best plus / minus statistics in the entire league with +49 and was therefore (unofficially) honored with the NHL Plus / Minus Award . In the subsequent playoffs , the Golden Knights advanced to the final, but were subject to the Washington Capitals there . In addition, Karlsson was honored with the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy at the 2018 NHL Awards , which honors high sporting standards and exemplary behavior. A little later he also received the Viking Award from his Swedish homeland .
He was only able to partially build on these achievements in the 2018/19 season with 56 points, but he still signed a new eight-year contract with the Golden Knights in June 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of 5.9 million US dollars.
International
Karlsson made his debut for Sweden at the 2011 U18 World Cup , where he won the silver medal with his team. At the U20 level, a gold and a silver medal followed at the U20 World Championships in 2012 and 2013 , before Karlsson made his debut with the men as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2013/14 .
At the 2017 World Cup , Karlsson won the gold medal with the Tre Kronor .
