Career

Bourque in the jersey of the Calgary Flames

René Bourque began his career as a hockey player in 2000 on the University of Wisconsin – Madison ice hockey team , the Wisconsin Badgers in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . After four years, Bourque left the university team and signed a contract with the NHL club Chicago Blackhawks on July 29, 2004 , without ever having been drafted . For the 2004/05 season , during the lockout in the NHL, Bourque received a contract with the Norfolk Admirals from the American Hockey League , the then Chicago farm team . For the Admirals he played in his first professional season in 78 games and reached the playoffs with his team. With 33 goals this season, Bourque set a franchise record. He was also able to contribute 27 assists .

In the following three seasons Bourque was a regular in the National Hockey League for Chicago. Only in the 2006/07 season he played again in the AHL for the Admirals. On July 1, 2008, Bourque was given in exchange for a future right to vote in an NHL Entry Draft to the Calgary Flames .

On January 12, 2012, the Flames transferred him together with Patrick Holland and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2013 in exchange for Michael Cammalleri , the rights to goalkeeper Karri Rämö and a five-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 to the Montréal Canadiens . In November 2014 he was sent back to a farm team in the AHL, the Hamilton Bulldogs , for the first time in eight years , before being swapped for Bryan Allen of the Anaheim Ducks on November 20 .

With the Ducks, Bourque only stayed a few months until he was given to the Columbus Blue Jackets in March 2015 together with William Karlsson and a second-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Ducks received James Wisniewski and a third-round vote in the same draft. Bourque ended the season with the Blue Jackets, but was not given a continuing contract. As a result, he joined the Colorado Avalanche on a trial basis , which provided him with a one-year contract in October 2016. After the contract expired, the Canadian moved to Djurgårdens IF in Svenska Hockeyligan in August 2017 .

International

On an international level, Bourque made his debut at the 2010 World Cup in Germany and came up with seven appearances for the Canadian selection, which finished seventh at the end of the tournament. Eight years later he was a member of Canada's Olympic squad, which - without players from the NHL - won the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Games .
