The 2016/17 NHL season was the 100th season of the National Hockey League (NHL). The regular season , at the end of which, as in the previous year, the Washington Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy , was played from October 12, 2016 to April 9, 2017. Best scorer (100) was Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers , who was also named the most valuable player of the season. Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, on the other hand, topped the scorers list (44).

The subsequent playoffs began on April 12 and ended on June 11, 2017 with the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators . As in the previous year, Sidney Crosby was honored as the most valuable player .

League operation

As in the previous year, special events took place in the 2016/17 season. This included the 2017 All-Star Game on January 29, 2017, which was hosted by the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center . In addition, selected regular season matches were played again as open-air games: The 2017 NHL Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks took place on January 2, 2017 at Busch Stadium , while the 2017 NHL Stadium Series featured the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers faced. The 2016 NHL Heritage Classic with the Edmonton Oilers and the Winnipeg Jets also took place at the start of the season . In addition, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings contested the NHL Centennial Classic on January 1, 2017 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the league at BMO Field .

So-called bye weeks (dt .: free weeks) were newly introduced , which give each team's game plans one free week, during which no training is permitted.

The Edmonton Oilers left their old home ground, Rexall Place , and play their home games from now on in the newly opened Rogers Place . In addition, the arenas of the Pittsburgh Penguins ( PPG Paints Arena ) and the Buffalo Sabers ( KeyBank Center ) were given new names.

Entry Draft

The 2016 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 24th and 25th, 2016 in Buffalo , New York . With the First Overall Draft Pick , the Toronto Maple Leafs selected US attacker Auston Matthews . Patrik Laine and Pierre-Luc Dubois were selected in second and third place . A total of 211 players from the NHL franchises were drafted in seven rounds.

Best scorer

Connor McDavid , best scorer and winner of the Art Ross Trophy .

With 100 points, Connor McDavid led the NHL scorer list, becoming the second youngest player after Sidney Crosby (2006/07), who won the Art Ross Trophy . Crosby, meanwhile, led the league with 44 goals scored, winning his second Maurice Richard Trophy after 2010 and also ensuring the first season since 2012/13 in which Alexander Ovechkin was not the best scorer. The top defender was Brent Burns with 76 points, while Leon Draisaitl became the first German in league history to place in the top ten on the scorer list. The plus / minus member and not of led Ryan Suter and Jason Zucker of the Minnesota Wild with +34; the worst value in this category had Tyson Barrie and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche with -34.

Best rookie scorer

With Auston Matthews , William Nylander and Mitchell Marner , the Toronto Maple Leafs made an outstanding rookie crop, which for the first time since the beginning of the "modern era" (1967) took three of the top four ranks of the rookie scorer list. Auston Matthews stood out, becoming the fifth newcomer in league history to hit the 40 goal mark. In goals per game and points per game, however, Patrik Laine led the rookies this season. Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets achieved the best plus / minus statistics with +17, while Mikko Rantanen was in last position with -25. Nikita Saizew received the most ice age from the Maple Leafs with an average of 22 minutes and one second per game.
