The 1927/28 NHL season was the eleventh season in the National Hockey League . Ten teams played 44 games each. The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup 3-2 against the Montreal Maroons . More than 20 years ago, Lester Patrick had won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Wanderers as a player and this year he wanted to lead the Rangers to their first title as a manager. This project was seriously jeopardized when New York goalkeeper Lorne Chabot was hit in the eye by a shot by Nels Stewart in the second final . Since the Rangers had no substitute goalkeeper with them, the manager took on this task himself and only let one of the 18 shots happen. The Rangers won 2-1 and Patrick unexpectedly won the Stanley Cup again as a player .
