The 1929-30 NHL season was the 13th season in the National Hockey League . Ten teams played 44 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 2-0 win in the final series against the Boston Bruins . Due to the low goals in the preseason (2.9 goals per game), the NHL changed its rules. So far it was only allowed to lead the puck forward and to play back passes. Now the forward pass was allowed. Only the blue lines were still not allowed to pass. This made the game faster and significantly more goals (5.9 goals per game). The outstanding player was Boston's Cooney Weiland . He benefited from the new rule and got 73 points. The previous record of 51 that Howie Morenz had set was exceeded by five more games. Morenz caused another innovation. With one shot he broke the nose of the Maroons goalie, Clint Benedict . When he went back on the ice a few weeks later, he was the first goalkeeper to wear a leather face mask .
