Nelson "Nels" Stewart (born December 29, 1902 in Montreal , Québec ; † August 21, 1957 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Montreal Maroons , Boston Bruins and New York Americans in the National Hockey League from 1925 to 1940 .

Career

They called the beefy Stewart "Old Poison" when he formed the "S-Line" at the Montreal Maroons with Babe Siebert and Hooley Smith . In his first NHL season he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the Maroons . It should remain his only one. His accurate shot was feared in the league, but he didn't hesitate to use the bat at his opponent.

He looked slow due to his stocky build, which didn't stop him from scoring 324 goals. In 1937 no one had scored more goals in the NHL and it was not until 1952 that he was overtaken by "The Rocket" Maurice Richard . When he resigned in 1940, he had the most penalty minutes at that time, at 953 minutes.

In 1952 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
