Dominik Hašek , b. Kaštánek , (born January 29, 1965 in Pardubice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper . He was most recently under contract with HK Spartak Moscow in the Continental Hockey League until April 2011 . In the National Hockey League he was active for the Chicago Blackhawks , Buffalo Sabers , Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators .

The "Dominator" - as he was also called - was one of the dominant goalkeepers in the 1990s and was the only goalkeeper to win the Hart Memorial Trophy twice in a row as the most valuable player in the league. He has been named the best goalkeeper in the NHL six times with the Vezina Trophy . He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Detroit Red Wings and the Olympic gold medal with the Czech national team . He has been a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame since 2014 and the IIHF Hall of Fame since 2015 .

Athletic career

From early childhood until the 1988/89 season he played for his hometown club HC Pardubice , after which he moved to Dukla Jihlava for one season . His great role model was the Czech national goalkeeper Karel Lang , also known as "The Witcher" .

At the age of 18, Hašek was selected as the 199th player in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks in the tenth round. The 1.80 m tall Czech had to wait seven years until he received a contract from the Chicago Blackhawks and was able to move to North America in 1990. There he played his first NHL game against the Hartford Whalers on November 6, 1990 . The game ended 1-1 and Hašek was able to fend off 28 of 29 shots. With the Chicago Blackhawks, however, Dominik Hašek never made it to become a regular goalkeeper - between 1990 and 1992 he mainly played for the farm team in Indianapolis (IHL). On August 7, 1992 Dominik Hašek switched to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for Stéphane Beauregard . In his first year with the Sabers he alternated in goal with Grant Fuhr and Daren Puppa before he became first goalkeeper in the 1993/94 season , together with replacement goal Grant Fuhr received the William M. Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals conceded and himself was honored with the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league . In 1996 he received the Vezina Trophy again. And in 1997 and 1998, he was honored twice in a row with the Lester B. Pearson Award for best player , the Hart Memorial Trophy for most valuable player, and the Vezina Trophy for best goalkeeper in the NHL . Despite the many personal successes, he was still missing a major title with the team. After all, he was able to win the gold medal with the Czech team at the 1998 Winter Olympics .

Resignation and comeback

Hašek had originally announced his resignation after the unsuccessful 1999/2000 season due to injury, but then withdrew. During the 2000/01 season Hašek declared that he wanted to defend the gold medal in Nagano (Japan) in Salt Lake City (USA) with the Czech Republic in 2002 . In order to optimally prepare for this event, he announced that he would play ice hockey for another year in the NHL . After this season, Dominik Hašek received the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the NHL for the sixth time .

Hašek in the jersey of the Detroit Red Wings

On July 1, 2001, Hašek moved, in exchange for Vyacheslav Koslow and two first-round draft picks, from the Buffalo Sabers to the Detroit Red Wings . He signed an annual contract with an option for two more years. It was Hašek's last chance to win the Stanley Cup . He knew how to use this opportunity after an outstanding season with the Red Wings. In the final, the Carolina Hurricanes were defeated 4-1 in the series. Hašek had six shutouts in the play-offs , which meant a new NHL record. However, he did not succeed in defending the Olympic gold medal.

About a week after the final, Hašek announced his retirement from professional ice hockey on June 25, 2002 and went back to the Czech Republic with his family. A year later, in the 2003/2004 season , he made his comeback with the Red Wings, where he only played 14 games due to injuries. Hašek was committed as a free agent in 2005 after the lockout by the Ottawa Senators and completed 43 games in the 2005/06 season , but was not used in the play-offs because he injured himself in the first game against Germany at the 2006 Winter Olympics and was canceled for the rest of the season. The Czech team won the bronze medal anyway.

After the end of the season, everything indicated that the now 41-year-old would finally end his career, especially since he had been injured frequently in recent years. The Ottawa Senators replaced him with Martin Gerber , who was nine years his junior, and did not renew his contract with Hašek. But on July 31, Hašek signed a one-year contract with his old employer, the Detroit Red Wings.

Hašek was able to reach for the Stanley Cup again. Although he was number one in Detroit, the number of his appearances was carefully dosed by coach Mike Babcock , as one did not want to risk injury from too many games. Hašek almost never sat on the substitute bench when he was not used because the risk of injury would have been too great if he had been substituted on. His back-up goals were Chris Osgood and Joey MacDonald . Hašek survived the season without major injuries and was again one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Especially in the playoffs he played a big part in the final of the Western Conference because of his strong performance.

After the season, he extended his contract again for a year, but this time threw him back several times injuries, so that he could only play half the games, but still got together with Chris Osgood the William M. Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals conceded. As number one, Hašek went into the playoffs for the Red Wings, but showed in the first round against the Nashville Predators weaknesses, whereupon he was replaced by Osgood. Detroit moved into the final against the Pittsburgh Penguins , where they won the Stanley Cup after six games.

A few days after the second Stanley Cup victory of his career, Hašek announced on June 9, 2008 that he would finally end his career at the age of 43.

Another comeback at home

On April 21, 2009, Dominik Hašek announced another comeback at the age of 44. In the 2009/10 season he played for his hometown club HC Eaton Pardubice in the Czech extra league and was able to win the Czech championship with this . In June 2010, the now 45-year-old moved to HK Spartak Moscow from the Continental Hockey League . There, his contract was not renewed at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Downsides

In addition to his outstanding athletic abilities, Hašek has been noticed several times due to his high temperament. During the 1996/97 season he attacked a reporter. During a friendly inline hockey game in the Czech Republic, he injured an opponent whom he had checked down from behind. He received a one-year ban from the Czech Inline Hockey Association.

particularities

A goalkeeper parade, the so-called Hašek roll , is named after Hašek . The goalkeeper, lying on the ground, lets go of his goalkeeper trowel and grabs his head with his free hand to fend off the puck. This maneuver is mainly used in 1-on-1 situations, when the attacking player has already played around the goalkeeper. Hašek was the first to use this movement. Furthermore, Hašek basically does not wear a goalkeeper mask with a cat-eye grid, but always a player's helmet with a cage grid (cage).
