Cristobal Huet (born September 3, 1975 in Saint-Martin-d'Hères ) is a former French - Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper and today's coach who won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 , was Swiss champion with HC Lugano in 1999 and was several times was named the best goalkeeper in the Swiss National League .
Career
Huet was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round in 214th place in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft . He plays in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and is also the goalkeeper of the French national ice hockey team . For this he has already participated in two Olympic Winter Games ( 1998 in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City ) and five ice hockey world championships (1997 to 2001).
During his time at HC Lugano in Switzerland , he was voted goalkeeper of the year twice in the 1999/2000 and 2000/01 seasons. On February 20, 2003, he celebrated his NHL debut against the Philadelphia Flyers in the Los Angeles Kings goal , just under a month later, on March 15, he was able to record his first shutout in the game against the Carolina Hurricanes . On February 5 and 6, 2006, he was able to celebrate two shutouts in a row within 24 hours. Huet is only the second French NHL player ever.
During the 2004/05 NHL season ( lockout ) he played for Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League . He got the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award for the goalkeeper with the best catch quota after the 2005/06 NHL season . During the 2006/07 season he was able to assert himself as number one in Montréal and his good performance in the first half of the season led to his being invited to the 2007 NHL All-Star Game . Then he and the Canadiens weakened. In mid-February 2007 he suffered an injury to his ankle and was not fit again by the end of the season, which the Canadiens ended without participating in the playoffs.
In the 2007/08 season Huet showed again good performances, but had to compete with young goalkeeper Carey Price at times . On the last day of the transfer window, Huet was transferred to the Washington Capitals . After they signed another goalkeeper with a regular seat claim in the summer of 2008 with José Théodore , the Frenchman did not extend his contract and moved to the Chicago Blackhawks . In the 2009/10 season he won the Stanley Cup with Chicago , where he was used in the play-offs only 20 minutes.
In the summer of 2010, the Hawks had to give up some players due to the NHL salary limit and were looking for a new employer for Huet. Friborg-Gottéron expressed interest in a commitment from Huet, while Sébastien Caron moved to the KHL. At the end of September, Huet, the Blackhawks and Gottéron accepted a loan contract for the 2010/11 season , so that Huet's salary, which is not fully borne by the Swiss club, does not have to be used to calculate the salary cap.
In October 2010 Huet received a Swiss passport after having been married to a Valaisian woman for seven years .
Huet's goal was to play in the NHL again for the 2011/12 season, but no club wanted him, so he stayed at HC Friborg-Gottéron for another season. In August 2012 Huet signed a four-year contract with Lausanne HC from the National League B , with which he achieved promotion to the National League A in 2013 .
He ended his career in March 2018 and then became a goalkeeping coach at Lausanne HC.
