Mode and rules
While the best eight teams in the preliminary round qualified for the play-offs, the last two played in a play-down round against relegation. For the teams in positions nine to twelve, the season was over after the preliminary round.
Preliminary round
The biggest surprise of the preliminary round was the Hannover Scorpions , who were able to catch up almost 20 points on the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg from the beginning of January to mid-March, thus preventing the play-downs.

Play-downs
The bottom two Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg and Kassel Huskies played from March 18 in a play-down series in the " Best-of-Seven " mode against relegation. Wolfsburg had the first home right due to the better ranking in the main round, which then changed in each of the games that took place every two days.

Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg - Kassel Huskies | 4: 3 | 2-0 | 0: 3 | 7-0 | 2: 4 | 0: 2 | 4: 1 | 3: 2 |
With that, the Kassel Huskies were decided as relegated athletes. Kassel remained in the league, however, as the Grizzly Adams license was withdrawn because the construction of a new arena that met the requirements of the DEL had not been completed on time.

For the first time in their history , the Eisbären Berlin became all-German champions and also won their first title after reunification. Against the Adler Mannheim, which had previously surprisingly beaten the Nuremberg Ice Tigers and Frankfurt Lions, which were better placed in the preliminary round, the capital city team also managed a sweep as the second team in DEL history, after the Adler Mannheim in 1997 . This had previously only succeeded the EC Hedos Munich in the 1993/94 season against the Düsseldorfer EG .
