Mode and rules
The season began with 18 teams that were supposed to play 34 games each against each other in a preliminary round. In addition, three regional groups were formed based on the model of the NHL , in which an additional single round with 10 games was played. There was no longer any promotion and relegation regulation. Admission to the DEL was decided at the green table based on sporting and, in particular, economic criteria. In a subsequent play-off round, the 16 best teams from the main round competed against each other.
