Ice hockey was the first sport that reunification took place before political unity and thus played a pioneering role. The number of Bundesliga teams was increased to twelve through the integration of the last two remaining teams in the GDR Oberliga , SC Dynamo Berlin - under the name EHC Dynamo Berlin - and SG Dynamo Weißwasser - under the name PEV Weißwasser . The following clubs took part in the Bundesliga (alphabetical order with previous year's position) :

mode

While the increase in the Bundesliga did not change anything when determining the German champions - the championship was played according to the tried-and-tested play-off system - there were some changes in the mode of the relegation process. The teams in places nine to twelve initially played against each other in a first play-down round (the ninth against the twelfth and the tenth against the eleventh) in a best-of-seven mode. Relegation was assured for the winners. The losers then had to compete against each other in another round in the "Best of Five" mode. The loser was relegated directly to the 2nd Bundesliga and was replaced by their champions, who were allowed to move up directly. The winner of this second play-down round, on the other hand, had the chance to stay up in a relegation round against the second in the 2nd Bundesliga - played in the "Best of Three" mode.

Preliminary round

EHC Dynamo Berlin used unauthorized players in the home games against EHC Freiburg (7: 4) and Eintracht Frankfurt (6: 7). Both games were rated 0: 5 against Dynamo.

Play-downs

The first play-down round was played in the " best-of-seven " mode, the second in the " best-of-five " mode.

The two new members from East Germany were at the bottom of the table after the double round, lost the first play-down round and then had to contest the decisive relegation duel. The EHC Dynamo Berlin had to relegate and was replaced by the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga, ESV Kaufbeuren . On the other hand, PEV Weißwasser got the chance to stay up in relegation against the second in the 2nd Bundesliga, the Krefeld EV .

The question of relegation was decided by the financial situation of the Bundesliga clubs. The Eintracht Frankfurt team withdrew from the Bundesliga for financial reasons after the end of the season. This decision by the Frankfurt team was made before the relegation to the last free Bundesliga place was over. The DEB therefore decided to set up a succession order for the allocation of the last two free Bundesliga places, which looked as follows: PEV Weißwasser, Krefelder EV when they win in relegation, EHC Dynamo Berlin, Krefelder EV when they lose in relegation. Since the DEB published this decision before the decisive third relegation game and the PEV Weißwasser remained in the Bundesliga in any case, the team of the Krefeld EV won the series without much resistance.

Play-offs

All play-off rounds, with the exception of the game for third place, were played in the " Best-of-Five " mode.

The first all-German champion was the Düsseldorfer EG , which was able to win its fifth title. In the final series they prevailed in the Rhenish duel against their arch-rival, the Cologne EC . Even the semi-finals were extremely dramatic, as both finalists had to make up a 2-0 deficit in the “ Best-of-Five ” series in order to reach the finals.
