The 2009/10 DEL season was the 16th season since the German Ice Hockey League was founded . After the previous season, the bottom of the table Füchse Duisburg withdrew from the league for financial reasons. For the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga , the Bietigheim Steelers , there was the possibility of promotion. However, the application to participate in the licensing procedure was withdrawn early.

The season began with the clash between the Adler Mannheim and the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers on September 3, 2009; the preliminary round ended on March 21, 2010 after 60 match days. The subsequent play-offs began on March 24th and ended on April 25th with the Hannover Scorpions winning the first title .

mode

At the 74th shareholders' meeting on July 2, 2009, all 15 clubs were granted the license for the 2009/10 season, which resulted in a mode change. The group division from the previous year is no longer applicable, there are 60 game days, with each club having four free games. Due to the tight schedule as a result of the Olympic Games and the World Cup in Germany, they are returning to playing the first play-off round in best-of-three mode. The following rounds will continue to be held as the best-of-five.

Renaming of the Sinupret Ice Tigers

After it became known in the previous season that the Sinupret Ice Tigers GmbH was insolvent, the Nuremberg District Court appointed a provisional insolvency administrator for the GmbH on November 25, 2008 , who prepared the insolvency report by December 30, 2008. On March 26th, 2009 the previous shirt sponsor Bionorica withdrew, so that on April 3rd, 2009 the group of investors around the jewelery manufacturer Thomas Sabo took over the Ice Tigers GmbH, which averted the bankruptcy and secured the game operations in the 2009/10 season. As a result of this license takeover, the Nuremberg company changed its name to Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers .

Preliminary round

September 2009

The season opened on September 3rd with the Adler Mannheim game against the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers . The first table leaders were the Hamburg Freezers , who defeated the Straubing Tigers 6-0. As a result, the Hanseatic League won only the following game in the penalty shootout - the team lost the remaining game days and closed the eighth game day, and thus September, with the last place in the table. Defending champion Eisbären Berlin lost 8: 3 to the Kassel Huskies on matchday one , but won all subsequent games of the month. The Augsburg Panthers also started successfully, spending the whole of September in the top third of the table. After their opening success, the favorite Mannheim only won again on the seventh matchday and, along with the Krefeld Penguins, was behind the previous year's semi-finalist Hannover Scorpions .

October 2009

Dimitri Pätzold before the game against Adler Mannheim on October 25, 2009

The most successful team of October were the Adler Mannheim, who were able to make eight out of nine games victorious and thus took the lead after the 17th matchday. The Hamburg Freezers, who only won two of eight games, remained at the bottom. On October 2nd the first meeting of last year's finalists, the DEG Metro Stars and the Eisbären Berlin took place. The Rhinelander prevailed 6-2 and broke the seven-game winning streak of Berlin. The Frankfurt Lions also won against the Eisbären two weeks later and became the first team to win in the [[O 2  World]] in 17 games.

With the engagement of the former NHL professional Ben Clymer , ERC Ingolstadt reacted to its injury misery and finally became the second most successful team behind the Mannheim team in October, which was reflected in a jump from 14th to sixth place. On October 15, the Krefeld Penguins signed the Finnish defender Janne Grönvall .

November 2009

Warm-up before the Eisbären Berlin game against DEG Metro Stars on November 20th

November was all about the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers. The team from Nuremberg only lost one of the eight games, achieved 20 out of 24 points and moved up from 14th to 8th place. The Frankfurt Lions got 19 out of 24 points and pushed the Eisbären Berlin from the top of the table. With 18 out of 24 points, the Hamburg Freezers left the table cellar and were on a pre-play-off spot at the end of the month. Meanwhile, the downward slide of the Krefeld Penguins and the Kölner Haie continued, both of which were only able to score six points in November, which meant the “red lantern” for Krefeld. The Augsburg Panthers and the Kassel Huskies also only achieved six points.

The league paused between November 6th and 8th due to the Germany Cup held at that time .

On the 21st matchday there was the second leg of last year's finalists, the Eisbären Berlin received the DEG Metro Stars in the O₂ World. The Düsseldorf team also won this game 7-3.

On November 24th, the Hannover Scorpions announced the signing of goalkeeper Travis Scott , who had already played for Cologne in 2007 and had won the Austrian championship with Klagenfurt's AC last year .

December 2009

In December, Master Berlin was able to gain ground again, in ten games the polar bears captured 27 points. The Hannover Scorpions needed one more game for the same number of points, but climbed from 14th to 4th place. December, however, was not a good month for Frankfurt, Kassel and Hamburg, all of which only managed to collect six points. While the two Hessian clubs needed nine games, Hamburg needed eleven games.

At the beginning of the month, Igor Pawlow lost his coaching position at the Kölner Haien, his successor was Bill Stewart , and the Krefeld Penguins also changed coaches in the middle of the month. Martin Jiranek had to vacate his post for Rick Adduono . Both teams showed a strong upward trend after the coaching change.

On December 13th, the game Straubing against Frankfurt had to be stopped when the score was 2: 1 in the second third break, because the ice resurfacing machine on the ice surface had a defect and the waste heat caused a hole in the ice. On December 18, a screw broke on the Messer hydraulic system of an ice machine in Düsseldorf and cut a deep hole in the ice. DEG led the second break against ERC Ingolstadt 3-0. Both games were rescheduled in January. At two other games in Berlin and Ingolstadt there were longer interruptions due to defects in the lighting system.

After Christmas, Adler Mannheim took part in the traditional Spengler Cup in Davos, where they just failed to make it to the finals.
