The 1977/78 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 20th season of the highest German ice hockey league . The German champions became the SC Riessersee , which was able to return to the top of the Bundesliga with its ninth championship title after having had to fight relegation in the previous two years. The defending champion Kölner EC had taken first place after the preliminary round, but ended the season in third place. The runner-up was the Berliner SC .
Due to the increase in the league after the end of the season, EC Deilinghofen , who had already been relegated, could remain in the Bundesliga. In addition to the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga , the Augsburger EV , the second, the Mannheim ERC , was promoted to the Bundesliga. Due to the bankruptcy of Krefelder EV , the third division of the 2nd Bundesliga, ESV Kaufbeuren , was also allowed to move up to the elite league.

There were no changes to the mode compared to the previous year. After a preliminary round as a double round, the best six teams qualified for the championship round, in which the champions were determined in the form of a single round. The last four teams moved into the relegation round, but this remained meaningless this season, as the league should be increased from ten to twelve teams.
