The 1978/79 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 21st season of the highest German ice hockey league . German champions became the Cologne EC , which won its second championship title. In contrast, ESV Kaufbeuren and Augsburger EV had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga . Even before the start of the season, the ex-champions Krefelder EV had to file for bankruptcy and then withdrew from the league. Even the EV Rosenheim had before the season financial problems and then merged with the TC Rosenheim to henceforth under the name Sports Federation Rosenheim join the game operation.
Due to the violation of deadlines when players changed clubs, the Mannheim ERC and SB Rosenheim should also be deprived of numerous points after the preliminary round, which would have caused Mannheim to crash into the relegation round. Both teams were only able to win the points in court.

Mode and rules
Since the Bundesliga had previously been increased to twelve teams, the teams first played a single round, after which the field was divided into a championship and a relegation round with six teams each. Championship and relegation round were then played in a triple round, taking the preliminary round points, which meant a total of 52 games for each club. The number of promoters and relegators was increased to two. Due to the fact that both the championship and the relegation had already been decided at a relatively early stage in the finals, the mode was described by critics as "boring", and a completely new mode was introduced for the following season .
According to a resolution at the DEB Association Day in summer, "advertising on the man" was allowed from this season. This was used in Cologne, Riessersee and Rosenheim.
