The 1985/86 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 28th season of the highest German ice hockey league . German champions became the Cologne EC , which won its fourth championship as an outstanding team of the season.

The Düsseldorfer EG also returned to the top of German ice hockey , they only had to admit defeat to the KEC in the final and became runner-up. In the relegation, the ten-time champions SC Riessersee managed to stay in the league for the third time in a row, while the newcomer SV Bayreuth had to relegate. The team from Eintracht Frankfurt took the vacated place as the winner of the relegation.

As in previous years, the mode with a double round (36 game days) and subsequent championship play-offs (best of five) of the best eight teams was retained. The last two placed against the best four teams of the 2nd Bundesliga North and the best four teams of the 2nd Bundesliga South competed in a relegation round .
