The German champion was the EC Hedos Munich , which had upgraded a lot before the season, but took over financially.

The reasons for the introduction of the new league were to be found in the events of the past few years. Since the introduction of the play-downs four years ago, the decision about relegation had not been made on the ice, rather the financial situation of some clubs was decisive. Four teams had to relegate during this period, although they were athletically qualified, due to their financial situation, either through voluntary withdrawal or through license revocation. In return, teams that had already been relegated to sport could keep their Bundesliga spots. This led to the ripening of the view, especially among the top division clubs, that, as is customary in the North American professional leagues, a licensing procedure should decide on the league affiliation alone. Another advantage of such a regulation was that clubs and municipalities would perhaps be more willing to invest in new, more modern and, above all, larger ice rinks if the sword of Damocles of sporting descent did not always hover above the financial commitment. Another reason for the introduction of the DEL was that the Bundesliga clubs did not see their wishes and concerns adequately represented by the DEB . They no longer trusted the association to satisfy the different demands of amateur and professional clubs to the same extent and, above all, to a sufficient extent. Therefore, after the end of the season and corresponding negotiations with the DEB, the Bundesliga clubs decided to set up a self-governing professional league with a total of 18 clubs. This decision ended the era of the ice hockey Bundesliga after 37 years.
In the run-up to the last Bundesliga season there were some small changes compared to the previous year. The quarter-finals of the play-offs and the 2nd round of the play-downs were played for the first time in the " Best of Seven " mode. In the quarter-finals, a different rhythm applied to the home and away games; Instead of the permanent change (home-away-home-away), the better placed team started with two home games, which were then followed by two away games, but otherwise everything stayed the same.

In the relegation games against the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga, the penultimate Schwenninger ERC managed to stay up . Both play-down rounds were played in the " Best of Seven " mode.

Play-offs
In the course of the season, the fifth title win in a row for the Düsseldorfer EG seemed to be on the horizon. After a sovereign win of the double round, the quarterfinals were also survived with 4-0 victories without any problems. But in the semifinals the defending champion showed initial weaknesses and needed five games to prevail against BSC Prussia , while final opponents EC Hedos Munich only needed three games against the Kölner Haie . After a 3-0 win in the final, the Bavarian capital finally won its first title in 72 years, when MTV 1879 Munich won the championship. But the club bought this success through excessive financial expenditure. Only a few months after the great triumph, therefore, the collapse occurred. The defending champion under the new name Maddogs Munich had to end the first DEL season prematurely and disappeared completely from the ice hockey stage.
Quarter finals
Both play-off quarter-finals were played in the " Best of Seven " mode, after which the teams competed against each other in the Best of Five mode.

This made the EC Hedos Munich German champions and was the fourth team that managed to win every series with a sweep , i.e. without a single play-off defeat. In addition, the EC Hedos Munich was the first team that could win a final series without defeat as a poorly placed team. The Eisbären Berlin only succeeded in doing this again in the 2010/11 season .
