The 2016/17 DEL season was the 23rd season of the German Ice Hockey League , the highest league in German ice hockey . 14 teams took part in the league. The season started on September 16, 2016. The main round ended on February 26, 2017.
Attendees
The Anschutz Entertainment Group , owner of Hamburg Freezers , announced on May 18, 2016 that it would no longer apply for a license for the Freezers for the 2016/17 season. The Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven applied for the freezers license. All 14 clubs received the license on July 1st, 2016:

The 14 clubs played a double round with 52 games per club. The best six teams qualified directly for the play-off quarter-finals, the teams in positions 7 to 10 played two more play-off participants in best-of-three series. The other play-off series were played in Best of Seven mode . The champions and the first two of the main round qualified for the 2017/18 Champions Hockey League .
Rule changes
Since this season, the extension of a game in the main round has been played with three against three field players, as has been the case in the National Hockey League since 2015.

Closing table
Three points are awarded to a team for a win after normal playing time, if the game is a draw after 60 minutes, both teams receive one point, the winner of the five-minute extra time (only with three against three field players) or after a necessary penalty shoot-out receives another point credited. If a team loses in regular time, it does not receive any points.

For the first time, all DEL games were broadcast live. The transmission rights were granted to Deutsche Telekom . One game per week was broadcast on free-to-air television, at least 40 of which were exclusively on Sport1 .
