The 1955/56 season of the ice hockey league was the eighth season of the highest German ice hockey league . German champion was EV Füssen , who prevailed in the decisive game against SC Riessersee and won his fourth championship title in a row.
Since the mode changed for the 1956/57 season and the league was increased to eleven teams, the last-placed SC Weßling remained in the league , as did the penultimate, the Düsseldorfer EG . In addition to the winner of the finals of the promotion round, the Mannheim ERC , the loser Kölner EK and the second in the promotion group south, the EV Kaufbeuren , also rose to the top division.

As in the previous year, the German champions were played in a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. Since the mode changed for the 1956/57 season and the league was to be increased to eleven teams, the direct relegation of the last placed and the relegation of the penultimate of the league against the runner-up of the promotion round was waived. Instead, the winner and runner-up of the promotion round and the second of the promotion group south rose to the league.
