mode

As in the previous year, the German champions were played in a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. Since the mode changed for the 1956/57 season and the league was to be increased to eleven teams, the direct relegation of the last placed and the relegation of the penultimate of the league against the runner-up of the promotion round was waived. Instead, the winner and runner-up of the promotion round and the second of the promotion group south rose to the league.
