The 1999/2000 DEL season was the sixth season of the German Ice Hockey League . The regular season began on September 10, 1999 and ended on March 12, 2000, the play-off round started on March 17, 2000. The Munich Barons , who had taken over the license from EV Landshut before the season, became German champions .

The athletic relegated Mosquitos Essen remained in the league, since a descent of the corporation to the 2nd Bundesliga was not possible for legal reasons. This was decided by the arbitration tribunal of the German Ice Hockey Federation after a complaint by mosquitoes. The Starbulls Rosenheim sold their corporation after the season to the second division club Iserlohn Roosters .

Mode and rules

The biggest change compared to the previous year was the reintroduction of relegation, so that the best eight teams in the preliminary round played off the German champions in a play-off round, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round points with them, played against relegation in a single round, with the last placed team as a sporting relegation. In addition, in the preliminary round, if there was a tie after regular time, no extra time was added as in previous years, but the game was decided directly in a penalty shoot- out, so that there could no longer be a tie at the end of the game.

Preliminary round

Closing table

The preliminary round was played in a double round, so that the teams played four times against each other and each team came to 56 games in the end.

With that, the mosquitoes Essen were determined to be relegated to sport. Since the Starbulls Rosenheim voluntarily withdrew from the league for financial reasons and sold their license to the Iserlohner EC , the Essenes fought for further membership of the DEL in court.

With this, the Munich Barons became German champions for the first time since the franchise was founded, mainly due to a very secure defensive player and an outstanding Boris Rousson in the Barons' goal.
