Heiko "Mike" Smazal (born January 6, 1974 in Neustadt an der Waldnaab ) is a former German ice hockey player who was active in the German ice hockey league for EV Landshut , the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , Munich Barons and Hamburg Freezers . In addition, he completed a total of 47 international matches for the German national team .
Career
The 1.79 meter tall defender began his career in the youth team of EV Landshut , for whom he was on the ice for the first time in the 1st Bundesliga in the 1992/93 season . Even after the German Ice Hockey League was founded in 1994 , he played for Lower Bavaria, but switched to league rivals Nürnberg Ice Tigers during the premier season . With the Franks, the left shooter reached the final of the German championship in the 1998/99 season , but this was lost to the Adler Mannheim .
After moving to the Munich Barons , he was able to catch up on the success the following year , and even after the franchise had moved to Hamburg , Smazal was still on the ice for the Barons, who now played as Hamburg Freezers . In the summer of 2007, his expiring contract was not extended and the defender moved from the Freezers to SC Bietigheim-Bissingen in the 2nd Bundesliga. He stayed there until the end of the 2009/10 season and then moved to the EHF Passau Black Hawks . In February 2011, the defender signed a contract with the Landshut Cannibals . For the 2011/12 season he will return to his home club. The now 40-year-old ended his career in April 2014.
International
Born in Bavaria, he wore the German jersey for the first time in 1991 when he was nominated for the German junior national team that same year . There were three more appointments to the squad of the junior national team before he went on the ice for the first time in 2000 for the senior national team. Heiko Smazal played 47 appearances for the German national team, including at the 2001 and 2004 World Championships .
