The
Kölnarena - venue of the 2001 Ice Hockey World Championship
The 65th Ice Hockey World Championships in 2001 took place at the following locations and times:
World Championship: April 28th to May 13th in Cologne , Hanover and Nuremberg ( Germany )
Division I, Group A: 16th April bis 22. April in Grenoble ( France )
Division I, Group B: 15. April bis 21st April in Ljubljana ( Slovenia )
Division II, Group A: 1. April bis 7. April in Majadahonda ( Spain )
Division II, Group B: March 26th to April 1st in Bucharest ( Romania )
A total of 40 teams took part in these world championships.
There were significant changes compared to the previous year , especially in the B, C and D groups. First the names were changed. The A-WM is only referred to as the World Championship, while the old B group is now referred to as Division I and the old C group as Division II. Incidentally, these new names apply to all ice hockey world championships, including the junior sector and women. In addition, the mode of delivery was changed in the two divisions. Both Division I and Division II play with twelve teams each. However, these do not meet in a single tournament, but are divided into two groups of six teams each. The two groups are played at different locations in the league system, with the respective group winner moving up to the next higher class and the bottom group moving down to the next lower class. So from now on there will be two promoters and two relegers for male seniors. There is no Division III (yet) this year.
The staging of the World Cup in Germany was not changed compared to the year 2000, apart from the fact that, as already mentioned, the number of relegated teams was increased to two.
The Czech team managed the hat trick and won the third World Cup in a row. It was the tenth title win for the Czech Republic (including the 6 successes of Czechoslovakia). The opponents in the final were Finland's team .
