During his junior years he played for HC Sparta Prague , where he began his professional career. In the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , the Edmonton Oilers selected him in the second round as 33rd. In 1994 he moved to North America and played with the Cape Breton Oilers in the American Hockey League . After only a year he returned to Prague. At the 1996 men's ice hockey world championship , he won his first world title with the Czech national team . For the 1997/98 season he tried again abroad and played in the Swedish Elitserien for the MoDo Hockey Club . Here he was the best scorer of his team. After a year in Sweden, he returned to Sparta Prague. The 1999 men's ice hockey world championship brought him his second title and after his third success in 2000 he tried again to gain a foothold in the NHL.

He signed with the newly formed Columbus Blue Jackets team and quickly became a solid NHL player. Since the team did not make it into the playoffs in his first season, he had time to play for his home country in the 2001 men's ice hockey world championship and was able to win his fourth world title.

When the NHL went on strike in the 2004/05 season , he played again for his home club Sparta Prague. In the 2005/06 season he was the best scorer of the Blue Jackets for the first time and achieved more than 60 scorer points. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he won the bronze medal with the national team.

As a player from the very beginning , he held several franchise records for the Blue Jackets for a long time . It ranks second in the all-time scorer list of the franchise from the US state of Ohio. In April 2008 he signed a three-year contract with the Czech extra league club HC Sparta Prague , where he began his career and his father František Výborný was head coach. In addition to his assignments as a player and team captain, he also acted as a sports director.

In May 2011 he left Sparta Prague and moved within the league to BK Mladá Boleslav . In March 2016, he tore a cruciate ligament and announced his retirement shortly afterwards.
