The 2010/11 season was the 18th regular staging of the highest Czech ice hockey league, the Tipsport Extraliga . The champions were HC Oceláři Třinec , who defeated HC Vítkovice Steel in the playoff final with a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series.

mode

In 52 games, all teams play against each other four times, each team has 26 home and 26 away games throughout the season. The teams in places 1 to 6 qualify directly for the play-offs, which are played in best-of-seven mode. The teams in places 7 to 10 play the other two playoff places in the best of five among themselves. The remaining four teams play a relegation round (play-out), the last of which must take part in the league relegation against the champions of the first division , which, like the play-offs, is played out in the best-of-seven mode.

Attendees

Since the BK Mladá Boleslav prevailed in the preseason in the relegation against the champions of the 1st division , the KLH Chomutov , there was no change in the composition of the league.

Start of the season

At the beginning of the season, the Bílí Tygři Liberec and HC Slavia Prague dominated the league before HC Vítkovice Steel took over the top of the table on October 1. With a 3-2 win against HC Vítkovice Steel in the top game of the 13th matchday, HC Oceláři Třinec replaced the team from Ostrava at the top of the table in mid-October.

On October 27th, HC Sparta Prague reacted to the ongoing negative series and signed Miloslav Hořava, a new head coach, and Radim Rulík as assistant coach. This replaced the hapless Miloš Holaň and David Volek . At the same time, BK Mladá Boleslav dismissed his coaching team, Jan Tlačil and Leo Gudas , and shortly afterwards presented Miloš Holaň as the new coach.

The coach of HC Kladno Vagnerplast , Otakar Vejvoda senior , came on November 4, 2010 Back from his post after his team had not won a point in the three previous games. The team was taken over by the previous coach of the Kladno junior team, Petr Tatíček senior .

Licensing scandal

In mid-November it became known that three Extraliga clubs had not used correctly registered players. As a consequence, the points were deducted from the matches in which the non-registered players were used. The three clubs had not properly reported their newly signed players to the association at the beginning of the season. The BK Mladá Boleslav 22 points were deducted, the HC Plzeň 19 points and the HC Kladno Vagnerplast lost six points.

Open-air game in the Speedway Stadium, January 2, 2011

In December, BK Mladá Boleslav was sentenced to a fine of 120,000 euros for mismanagement. During an inspection of the licensing process, the club was unable to prove that it had reduced its debts to six players. Due to a lack of documents, the Extraliga (APK) shareholders' council also suspected that the association had given false information in a previous declaration on the debt issue. The club from Mladá Boleslav was threatened with the withdrawal of its license and thus expulsion from the extra league. Ultimately, a fine of the equivalent of 120,000 euros was imposed.

Outdoor play

Game scene between PSG Zlín and HC Eaton Pardubice , February 2011

On January 2nd, 2011, the first open-air game of the Extraliga took place in Pardubice . The host HC Eaton Pardubice beat HC Kometa Brno 4-2 in front of 17,140 spectators. The open-air game was held in the local speedway stadium, in which two additional grandstands were installed for this event, so that a total of 25,000 seats were available. The national record from 1962 was missed with 17,140 spectators - at that time 18,500 people had attended an ice hockey game in Prague.

In January 2011 there were also three further coach changes in the Extraliga: On January 5, Vladimír Jeřábek resigned as head coach of HC Kometa Brno after his team had lost eight games in a row and was replaced by his assistant Ladislav Lubina . On January 22nd, Robert Reichel was replaced as head coach of HC BENZINA Litvínov by Vladimír Kýhos . Three days later there was another coach change when Václav Baďouček took over the coaching post from Antonín Stavjaňa at HC Energie Karlovy Vary .

End of the main round

In mid-February 2011, HC Oceláři Třinec won the preliminary round after a 4-0 home win over Plzeň and won the coveted President's Cup for the first time. The HC MOUNTFIELD and Pardubice qualified after wins in extra fifth and sixth for the playoff quarterfinals.

With a 4-3 victory over the white tigers from Liberec, HC Benzina Litvinov secured ninth play-off place. HC Energie Karlovy Vary achieved tenth place with a point win against HC MOUNTFIELD. Bili Tygri Liberec, HC Vitkovice Steel and PSG Zlin also qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The pre-play-offs, which began on February 23, were played by Slavia Prague, HC Pilsen 1929, HC Benzina Litvinov and HC Energie Karlovy Vary.

On March 21, 2011, the BK Mladá Boleslav Miloš Holaň and replaced him by Vladimír Jeřábek, so Holaň was released for the second time within a season of his office.
