Andrej Podkonický (born May 9, 1978 in Zvolen , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Kometa Brno in the Czech extra league since 2011 .

Career

Andrej Podkonický first played in the youth department of the HKm Zvolen and came to his first appearances in the second-class first division at the age of 16 . In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , the St. Louis Blues selected him in the eighth round in 196th place. The Slovak then moved to the Western Hockey League for the Portland Winter Hawks . In his second year he celebrated numerous successes with his team and Podkonický himself received several awards. At the side of his compatriot and later NHL All-Star Marián Hossa , he first reached first place after the regular season and was also able to successfully contest the play-offs . As President's Cup winners, the Winter Hawks qualified for the final tournament for the Memorial Cup . Here too, Podkonický's team prevailed and won the most important junior championship in North America . As the top scorer in the finals, the Slovakian received the Ed Chynoweth Trophy and was elected to the All-Star Team.

This was followed by a switch to professional senior ice hockey. First, the St. Louis Blues Podkonický sent in the American Hockey League to their farm team , the Worcester IceCats . There he brought consistent performance, but it was not enough to play in the best league in the world. After two and a half years, the Blues transferred the left-handed shooter to the Florida Panthers in exchange with Eric Boguniecki in December 2000 . After 41 games for the Louisville Panthers , he finally made his debut in the National Hockey League . Podkonický scored one goal in six games. For the 2001/02 season he moved back to Europe and signed a contract with HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish SM-liiga . After half a year he joined HC Slovan Bratislava and played there the rest of the season. In 2002 he switched to the German Ice Hockey League with the Iserlohn Roosters . With the Sauerlanders , he narrowly missed the play-offs. He then looked again for his chance in the NHL and signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals . But also this time he spent most of the season only in the AHL with the Portland Pirates and only came to two missions with the Capitals.

Therefore, he moved to the Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Czech extra league in 2004 . Here the Slovakian and his team achieved first place after the regular season for three consecutive years. In the play-offs, however, his team always failed in the quarter- or semi-finals. The 2007/08 season he then played in the Russian Super League with Vitjas Chekhov . Shortly before the end of the season, Podkonický returned to Liberec and was active there the next year. After finishing ninth in the regular season, the left shooter failed with his team in the pre-play-offs. For the 2011/12 season he moved within the Czech extra league to HC Kometa Brno .
