Ice hockey has been practiced at HIFK since 1927, and an independent ice hockey section was founded in 1945. The ice hockey department was significantly influenced by the former NHL player and Stanley Cup winner Carl Brewer , who was hired as a player-coach in 1968. Brewer introduced the North American style of play at HIFK, which has been maintained in the club ever since. Brewer's influence on the development of Finnish ice hockey was recognized in 2003 when it was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame .
Since the establishment of the ice hockey department, the team has won the Finnish ice hockey championship a total of seven times ( 1969 , 1970 , 1974 , 1980 , 1983 , 1998 and 2011 ). HIFK plays its home games in Helsingin Jäähalli .
