During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1983 in the seventh round as a total of 134th player by the Buffalo Sabers and failed with his team in the 1983/84 season only in the playoff final at Tappara Tampere . Initially, however, the attacker stayed in Finland, where he ran up for the HIFK Helsinki in the 1985/86 season. The season 1994/95, which was shortened due to the lockout , began the Finn at his ex-club HIFK Helsinki before returning to Chicago after resumption of play in the NHL. However, he ended the season at the Vancouver Canucks , to which he was transferred shortly before the end of the trade deadline for Murray Craven .
In the summer of 1995 Ruuttu returned permanently to Europe, where he then went hunting for goals for Västra Frölunda from the Swedish Elitserien and Grasshopper Club Zurich in the Swiss National League B for one season - in Zurich together with his compatriot Mika Nieminen . After one year each in the SM-liiga at HIFK Helsinki, with which he became Finnish champion for the first and only time in his career in 1998 , and the Espoo Blues , the former national player ended his season at the age of 35 after the 1998/99 season Career.
